~ SYNOPSIS AND Translations ~

Below is the second Japanese translation of "Boote in der Nacht" from the German lyrics. When the Toho theatre company decided to stage Elisabeth in Japan, they asked the original Takarazuka translator to expand on his work. It is interesting to contrast this more literal translation with his Takarazuka translation.

SCENE 19: ?

FRANZ JOSEPH:

You know, don't you?
The reason I have come here.

ELISABETH:

No. But I have an idea.

FRANZ JOSEPH:

Return to me, Sissi.
The two of us are one.
I still believe that.
I love you.
Love has the power to heal even the deepest wounds.

SHIPS IN THE NIGHT
BOOTE IN DER NACHT

ELISABETH:

We have a love beyond healing or repair,
But I've been waiting for a miracle.
Eventually, won't a day come in which we can
Realize and accept each other's faults?
Like a pair of ships in the night,
We move closer
But then slip past one another,
Only reaching our respective destinations.

FRANZ JOSEPH:

We have too many desires and wishes.

ELISABETH:

A little too many.

FRANZ JOSEPH:

I want us to work towards life's goals together.

ELISABETH:

Two people's goals....

FRANZ JOSEPH:

If you could see through my eyes,
We could clear our misunderstandings, couldn't we?

BOTH:

Like a pair of ships in the night,
We move closer
But then slip past one another,
Only reaching our respective destinations.

ELISABETH:

Even if my boat drew up beside yours....

FRANZ JOSEPH:

Please know this; I need you.

ELISABETH:

....We would glide on in the night fog and I'd lose you.

FRANZ JOSEPH:

Please believe this; I'm loving you.

BOTH:

Our solitary journeys of lonliness grow further apart.
A feeling of peace can only be seen in the far distance.

FRANZ JOSEPH (Speaking):

I love you.

ELISABETH:

You must understand, it is no good. It is too late for me.
