SCENE 15: KASHIWAGI

KASHIWAGI (Singing):

Why did this happen?

YUUGIRI (Speaking):

Kashiwagi? Kashiwagi, are you alright?

KASHIWAGI (Singing):

I've horribly wronged Genji-no-kimi.

YUUGIRI (Speaking):

What are you talking about, Kashiwagi?

KASHIWAGI (Singing):

Perhaps the most agony I've ever felt.
I want to die.
Everything is already over.

YUUGIRI (Singing):

If you live, something good will come along.

YUUGIRI (Speaking):

Cheer up, Kashiwagi.

YUUGIRI (Singing):

Certainly, tomorrow is...
Certainly, you can face the day.

KASHIWAGI (Speaking):

Yuugiri.

HIKARU GENJI (Speaking):

I recognize the handwriting
Of the characters in this letter...
How many times I reread this,
yet I don't believe it...

YUUGIRI (Speaking):

Kashiwagi.

HIKARU GENJI:

That Kashiwagi is...

YUUGIRI:

Are you okay?

KASHIWAGI:

Truthfully...
about your father,
Genji-no-kimi,
there is a small thing wrong...

YUUGIRI:

Kashiwagi, what has happened between you and Father?

KASHIWAGI:

In my heart
I deeply want to apologize...

YUUGIRI:

Exactly what are you saying, Kashiwagi?!

KASHIWAGI:

Ending in this place,
dying is so painful - ah!

YUUGIRI:

Kashiwagi?

KASHIWAGI:

You must find a chance to discover what happened and mediate for me...

YUUGIRI:

Kashiwagi!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TOKI NO SUDAMA:
Genji-no-kimi,
behold the justice in
karma's eternal cause and effect.
Retribution for your similar crime
with Fujitsubo, the wife of your father
Kiritsubo-tei.
Now, watch.
KIRITSUBO-TEI:
Ohh, my dear child.
HIKARU GENJI:
Father,
were you indeed aware
that Fujitsubo's son
Reizei-tei is my child?
LADY:
San-no-miya-sama,
finally your baby has been born!
TOKI NO SUDAMA:
You yourself have a child outside of morality,
because you live of love, don't you?
HIKARU GENJI:
Father, were you held by this same
distressing suffering that I am?
A youth's love created a life on that day.
Now, how should I view the memories of that
terrible offense?
TOKI NO SUDAMA:
A new life is born!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

YUUGIRI:

Kashiwagi has died.
I don't know what happened to Kashiwagi,
but even to the end,
he was concerned
for my father,
Hikaru Genji.
Hikaru Genji... my father.
From Kiritsubo-tei to Genji,
from Genji to me,
my bloodline is inherited.
At this time
I feel that my father
dwells inside of me.
Inside my father,
I am also.
And, I feel that my father's
grief and sadness are mine as well...

SAKURA CHIRU

YUUGIRI (Singing):

Pour down,
Pour down,
Be an eteral scattering of petals in remembrance.
Spill, fall,
Pile up in drifts like snow
Upon my beloved one.

Before one knows it
The time is at hand.
The breeze disperses
Dancing cherry blossoms.
Warm sunlight
Bathes the cherry blossoms
Which do no sleep.

NOTE: The wording of the song "Sakura Chiru" provides an association with death in Japanese, as pieces of paper shaped like lotus petals are scattered during the procession of Buddhist memorial ceremonies.

A heartfelt thank you to Frances Pickering for your great help in translating "Sakura Chiru"!
