- SYNOPSIS
- Kamen no
Romanesque is set in 1830, during the street
uprisings made famous in Les Miserables. It's the story of
Valmont and Merteuil, two French nobles. Valmont has his
sights set on Madame Marianne (a married woman whose
husband is out of town) as his next conquest, but
Merteuil proposes that he "corrupt" the young
Cécile Volanges, a sweet, innocent girl. Danceney
is a kind young man who falls in love with Cécile.
Danceney makes the mistake, though, of developing a crush
on Merteuil and so he becomes friends with Valmont.
Valmont pretends to be delivering letters from Danceney
to Cécile in order to make his move, but he takes
his time at actually making love to her, which annoys
Merteuil. Merteuil accuses him of falling in love with M.
Marianne (whom Valmont visits in secret, and whom has
fallen in love with Valmont) and demands that he leave
her for the sake of his reputation. Because Valmont loves
Merteuil, he breaks up with Marianne. Valmont loved
Marianne as well, though, and breaking up with her hurts
him... so he takes out his frustration on Cécile.
When Danceney discovers this, he challenges Valmont to a
pistol duel.

This is the part You
Higuri changes from Les Liaisons
Dangereuses.
In the original novel (as well as in all four film versions
and one opera that exist of it) Valmont was supposed to be
killed by Danceney. But in Kamen no Romanesque, Valmont survives and
returns to Merteuil.
