Takarazuka musicals take inspiration from many mediums. Some are Japanese versions of well-known Western musicals and some are based on books or movies. Others are manga (Japanese comics) adaptions, but many are original. The subjects vary greatly from one production to the next, some set in Japan's feudal past, others in the contemporary United States, and others in long-ago Europe. The settings are often foreign and exotic, such as ancient Egypt or China. This allows for lavish costumes and gorgeous, finely detailed sets. Takarazuka productions go all out, with so much to see and hear that you'd want to see a musical more than once in order to take it all in.
